There was a study done by UPS in the 1990's. They saved money by getting their drivers to back into driveways because of the reduction in accidents from not having to back out. Also, the study found that it's cheaper to make three right turns around the block than trying to make a left turn in the city. Maybe the cost of idling, maybe the reduction in accidents.
