      Indeed, I have several of those exact Sunbeam Automatic Toasters. I prefer the oldest T-20 models before they started engineering cost out. They are wonderful.

            @rozzin Indeed. I collect them, clean them up, bring them back to life, pass them on. So a number of family members and my neighbor also have one. You can get them for $20 to $200 on eBay. Why not? They are the best toasters ever made. Sunbeam appears to have made a lot of them. And they last.

      This whole "toasting without desiccating" idea is fascinating. Especially after I blew through a whole loaf of bread last week trying to get enough toasted-but-still-soft-enough-to-bite-through slices for 3 sandwiches....
      
      Is this another case of "easy 50 years ago but impossible now"?

         @rozzin Hmmm... a toaster oven with steam?  Is that a timer or a doneness sensor he is setting?

            @jd yeah it does look like the Balmuda is timer-based, not doneness-based (he says "3 and a half minutes" as he sets the dial)..., so that's like..., how many steps forward vs. how many steps back? Also he's using special bread with it?
